Character Background and Description Eugene was originally adopted into the back forty tribe, and started working in the mines as soon as he was old enough to do so. He would probably have spent his life in those dark and dangerous caves facing gas leaks, cave ins, and other unfortunate mining accidents, if not for an unexpected miracle. At around the age of 13, Eugene’s tribemates discovered he was fertile, and the fertility tribe claimed him as one of their own. Since then Eugene has been a member of the fertility tribe and enjoyed the benefits and status of being one blessed by god.
Eugene is now around the age of 60, and has suspected for the last 10 to 15 years that he is losing god’s favor. He has tried to keep this fact to himself, but others have figured out. Slowly, the rest of the tribe has been leaving Eugene out and pushing him out. Services that are supposedly available to the whole tribe are no longer available to Eugene. It is only a matter of time before Eugene will be cast out of the fertility tribe in disgrace. Eugene is aware of this and fears having to seek member in one of the ‘lesser’ tribes. Of all the tribes Eugene may end up in, he fears returning to the back forty the most.
When he is not dealing with his responsibilities in the fertility tribe (mainly procreation), Eugene has been seeking out a means to regain god’s favor, exploring superstitions and practices throughout the tribes that offer to grant the practitioner fertility. In desperation, Eugene has even gotten involved in some of the practices of the lake tribe. If there is a way to recover his fertility, Eugene swears he’ll find it, no matter what it takes.
Eugene tries to keep his fear and desperation to himself, and projects a pleasant and friendly demeanor to those around him.
